6. Assessment of measurement uncertainties
All these evaluations enable us to estimate the uncertainty of a measurement process. During a measurement, various factors come into play (see figure: Synoptic diagram of a measurement process) and mix, around the desired value, their own errors, whether random or predictable, to produce a measurement result, in the sense of the VIM :
6.1 Measurement result (2.9): set of values assigned to a measurand, supplemented by any other relevant information available.
Note 1: A measurement result generally contains relevant information about the set of values, some of which may be more representative of the measurand than others. This can be expressed as a probability density function.
