From our point of view, traceability of a product, whether food or non-food, and its components, means being able to identify, with precision, its origin and then its path along the economic chain, from the initial producer to the end consumer, from stage to stage, whatever the import, processing, packaging or distribution phases.
In Mesopotamia, cereal jars were sealed with clay balls marked with the owner's name in cuneiform, making it possible to decipher the oldest form of writing. As for the stoppers on Roman amphoras, they bore the marks of the merchants and their port address.
