Use of reference materials

Due to the vast diversity of matrices and the physical, chemical, or technological properties being measured, the preparation and characterization of reference materials require a wide range of expertise and resources. Since these capabilities are naturally distributed among different laboratories, institutes, and companies, the production of reference materials is itself distributed on an international scale.

This diversity complicates the task for users, who must exercise sound technical judgment to select a reference material suited to their needs, regardless of the type of producer.
