Functional analysis: represent the tree structure of functions to find appropriate technical solutions

For each technical function you want to develop, if you want to find innovative solutions, always start from general principles for realizing this function, without evoking precise technical solutions.

Start with brainstorming methods and inform the working group about the basic rules of this method:

• no technical judgment is acceptable in the first instance;

• all ideas, no matter how far-fetched, are acceptable;

• start by getting the group to work on solutions based on principles, so as not to forget any solutions (e.g.: moving an object in translation by 20 cm can be achieved by a jack, a crank-crank system, an electric motor, etc.);

• detail and study each principle, and check its feasibility using the assessment criteria...
