The difficulty of intervening a posteriori, once products are already in the hands of the end consumer, to remedy a safety defect, underlines the importance of integrating safety right from the product design stage.
Standards, which increasingly include consumer safety in their provisions, are an excellent tool to which both consumer organizations and manufacturers can contribute.
For consumers, standards must be as comprehensive as possible, and meet their needs by ensuring that the products concerned meet appropriate levels of quality and safety.
For the manufacturer, the standard is also the key to accessing certain markets.
