For most people, the word "handling" means moving an object, but the expression "continuous handling" is far less evocative. That's why we propose this simple definition: "Continuous handling is the means of handling flows along a predetermined path". This path can be more or less complex to resolve the various functions: receiving, storage, production, order picking, etc., of a warehouse, a factory, etc. In addition, we need to distinguish between the continuous handling of bulk products and that of isolated loads. When analyzed, continuous handling is characterized by the nature of the flows, the materialization of circuits and the movement of loads (see figure
1
).
Continuous handling has undergone considerable technical development, thanks to the contribution of automation and information technology. It has a major impact on industry and services, particularly in terms of productivity, quality, safety and, consequently, cost efficiency. It is a substantial component of logistics.
