The transport of goods within a given geographical area, from the sender’s location to the recipient’s, that is, the fulfillment of the transport contract entered into with the customer, requires the involvement of multiple parties, including the freight forwarder, the sorting center, and the delivery center (Figure 1).

  • Freight forwarder

    The freight forwarder (more rarely a carrier, except for local traffic, which is an extension of network traffic) picks up packages from the shipper, sorts them on its loading dock according to their destination, and transports them (using its own or chartered vehicles) to the next point in the transport chain.
