4. Availability
Availability is defined as the ability of a device, in terms of its reliability, maintainability, and maintenance logistics, to perform or be capable of performing a function at a given moment or within a given time interval.
This definition calls for three essential remarks.
"... in terms of its reliability, maintainability, and maintenance logistics..." : availability is the result of these three components (see figure 3 ).
It is easy to understand that the higher the reliability and maintainability (respectively, fewer failures and shorter repair times), the better the availability will be.
