The price we pay for our ultra-connected, media-driven societies' constant quest for immediate, simplified information is that the meaning of disaster-related words is increasingly overused by journalists and politicians alike. In the name of a deceptive promise of academic egalitarianism that leads to dramatic academic renunciations, lexical rigor has undergone a massive decline in favor of an impoverished "Frenglish", supposed to reconnect the intellectual and political "elites" with society. In reality, however, the paradox is that this movement has been accompanied by a growing distrust of institutions on the part of citizens.
