An audit is characterized by its scope, criteria and objectives. It may be tempting to assign the auditors to a task by specifying only the "process" concerned. However, auditors need to understand the ins and outs of the audit. They need to know exactly what the requirements are (ISO 9001, internal procedures, specifications), as a non-conformity can only be identified in relation to a requirement that has not been met! Furthermore, audit objectives define what is expected of the audit (degree of conformity, assessment of effectiveness, identification of improvements, etc.).
