2. Blockchain: a reminder of the main features you need to know about

2.1 Definition and technical foundations

There is no single or universally accepted definition of what a blockchain is. The more general term "distributed ledger" is sometimes preferred, as in ISO 23254:2022. The Office québécois de la langue française defines it as a register simultaneously recorded and synchronized on a computer network, which evolves through the addition of new information previously validated by the entire network and destined never to be modified or deleted (2), a definition that suits us as it insists on the immutable aspect of data. The European MICA regulation of 2023 (3) governing the use of cryptoassets prefers the following definition: a repository of information that keeps a record of transactions and is shared and synchronized within a set of DLT network...
