7. Types of Trafficking and Products

Traditionally, there are two main types of rail freight transport: block trains, on the one hand—considered the rail mode’s strongest area—and unit load transport, on the other.

However, existing traffic patterns and their potential warrant a more comprehensive analysis.

7.1 Entire trains

The term "block trains" or "complete trains" refers to the transport of railcars from one point to another without any changes to the train’s composition during the journey, provided that the load being hauled is sufficient. It should be noted, however, that for technical reasons or due to the requirements of rolling stock and personnel management, there may be changes in locomotives or conductors during the journey.
