At least as far as industrialized countries are concerned, it is fair to say that current social expectations of agriculture are the result of a combination of several currents driven by a variety of motivations. Most of these are external to the farming community, such as ecologists and environmentalists, health professionals, international solidarity organizations, water authorities, local authorities, neo-liberal economists, consumers and local residents, but they can also be internal, such as trade unions asserting a peasant identity.
