3. Working in Heterogeneous Engineering: The Contribution of Mediating Objects

Let’s pause here to consider the two complementary concepts presented in this article:

  • heterogeneous engineering: it simultaneously addresses social, environmental, and technological issues;

  • mediating object: it associates a material, visual, or conceptual artifact with families of evolving narratives, anchoring a shared vision.

The mediating object facilitates the implementation of heterogeneous engineering. Previously, we presented intentional practices for mobilizing mediating objects. We also practiced identifying underlying mediating objects in existing practices within companies.
