Summary
Dental implants are the modern therapeutic solution for partial or total edentulism. Since the 1980s, the material par excellence for this dental application has been titanium and its alloys. The success of an implant depends on its osseointegration into the jaw. This calls for the use of coatings and surface treatments to optimize osseointegration and minimize healing time. Because of the oral environment (saliva) and the chewing function, implants are subject to corrosion, wear and tribocorrosion.
