5. Choosing your in situ observation technique
There are several observation techniques to choose from, depending on your objectives and the system being analyzed (organization, procedure, mechanical product, software or service). This step presents three main ones:
5.1 The cognitive walk
After preparing the evaluation based on a series of action sequences, you imagine what the user will think, thus detecting any difficulties he may encounter. You interpret the results using statistical analysis.
This technique is the simplest to implement, the least costly, but also the least effective. In many cases, you can't quite fit into the user's suit, and your knowledge of the system can bias the results.
