How many stages should be represented on a VSM?

The mapping of existing processes must be sufficiently detailed to identify opportunities for improvement, but it must also be easy to read. Experience has shown that a map describing a process in 10 to 30 steps satisfies these constraints. By the same token, it is not always appropriate to represent all information flows. Focus on essential flows, at least initially.

Are there any standards for producing a VSM?

There are no standards for the symbols to be used in mapping. Make sure you keep the symbols simple, and above all that they are understood and shared by all Value Stream Mapping participants.
