What bibliometric indicators are needed to assess the quality of publications?

The SCImago Journal and Country Rank (SJR) portal [5] offers a set of indicators developed by an Iberian research group (SCImago Research Group). It is based on citation network analysis of Elsevier's Scopus scientific bibliographic database.

Scopus has the advantage of indexing more journals than Web of Knowledge, especially European ones. It references fewer documents than Google Scholar, but only peer-reviewed documents. It offers a federated query interface that facilitates multi-database (and multi-publisher) searches. Accessible by subscription only from the SciVerse platform, this platform also hosts ScienceDirect (Elsevier's catalog of 10 million articles), as well as Hub (a direct competitor to Google Scholar), providing free access to Scopus bibliographic references and, more broadly, to patents and institutional sites.
