To accelerate electrochemical reactions in polymer electrolyte fuel cells and achieve current densities acceptable for practical applications, it is essential to introduce specific materials called "catalysts" at the anode and cathode.
The role of a catalyst is to accelerate or facilitate chemical reactions, without being consumed by the reactions themselves.
Generally speaking, the catalysts offering the best activity and durability for ORR and HOR are composed of platinum or platinum group metals (PGM), palladium (Pd) and ruthenium (Ru) in particular.
