BPA (bisphenol A), whose systematic name is 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane (figure
1
), is used as one of the monomers in the manufacture of polycarbonate, a polymer with excellent transparency, high rigidity (glass transition temperature Tg ∼ 150°C) and good impact resistance. For these qualities, it is used in the manufacture of many food containers and utensils, such as beverage bottles, baby bottles, tableware (plates and cups) and storage containers.
BPA is also found in storage and transport systems (pipes, tanks), such as reusable carboys, and in certain internal varnishes on cans, where it contributes to the elasticity, adhesion and sealing of the packaging....
