In addition to the natural need to formalize mathematical expression, the W3C has clearly stated the objectives guiding the specification and implementation of MathML :

• encode scientific information at all levels for teaching and dissemination;

• encoding notation as well as mathematical semantics;

• facilitate conversion to and from other representation formats, whether for content or presentation;

• enable selective and intelligent transfer of information according to the specifics of the implementing software;

• enable efficient Internet browsing, even with complex equations ;
