High availability in IP networks

The functional architecture of routers is based on a logical separation of the functions supported by the equipment, in two planes (figure 2 ).

The control plane is the "intelligent" part of the router. It establishes and maintains routing tables (RIBs, Routing Information Base) using routing protocols that determine the route to be taken to all destinations on the network, by exchanging information on the state of the network between the control planes of each router.
