With the evolution of networks towards value-added services and the growing complexity of the protocols used, network metrology has become an indispensable tool for network verification and planning. The term metrology covers all the measurement techniques available in networks (we have limited ourselves to measurements made at the level of IP networks). The range of possible measurements is vast, and it is particularly important to know what you want to measure or highlight, in order to choose the right technique and parameters.
