One of the most important aspects of metrology is knowing what you want to characterize, in order to choose the right metrics, models and architectures. The IETF and ITU define a set of relevant metrics for evaluating network parameters, from a deterministic point of view for the IETF, and from a probabilistic point of view for the ITU.
