5. Temporality of RPL
We have seen that the sending of signaling messages in a proactive routing protocol must be managed in such a way as not to overload the network too much, but must also be able to react to a topology change. RPL's DIO and DAO messages must therefore be sent according to precise rules, which we will describe below.
5.1 DIO: Trickle algorithm
As RPL is a proactive protocol, DIO messages are sent periodically to configure routes and announce changes. To minimize the number of DIO messages sent, a special timing algorithm is used: Trickle
