3. Topology construction
Topology construction is one of RPL's most important functions. It is achieved using the DIO, DAO and DIS messages, as described below.
In a network operated by RPL, at least one node is configured to be a root DODAG: the RPL root. This root broadcasts a special message, the DODAG Information Object (DIO), to its neighbors, who in turn propagate their own DIO.

In this article, we won't go into detail about the format of the various RPL messages. Instead, for each message type, we will extract the various options and essential parameters. Readers interested in the precise message format can consult RFC 6550
