INTRODUCTION
To say that the Internet is thriving is a popular statement these days. But beyond this statement, it is interesting to note that the rise of the Internet is characterized by the generalization of a mode of operation that previously existed in terminal systems: a limited number of servers concentrate and process requests from a multitude of clients. Where the network of networks differs from this model is in the nature of its clients: not a homogeneous fleet of well-known terminals, dedicated to a single function, but a heterogeneous and anonymous crowd of computers running all kinds of applications. The inherent mix of information, the vulnerability of the ingenuous commoner to the malice of the clever profiteer, the improbability of finely modelling network users, thus definitively erase any possibility of operating the Internet with mutual and general trust. And yet, whatever the case, the inextricable Web needs to be secured in order to provide a viable service: it's up to the researcher and engineer to provide the appropriate frameworks. Here, we are particularly interested in examining how cryptology and protocol engineering combine to make applications such as e-commerce secure.
