The concept of pre-coated products, which originated in the USA around 1937 for the manufacture of Venetian blinds, has established itself worldwide as a reliable and high-performance product. In 2006, global consumption exceeded 18 million tons (MT), with an average annual growth rate of 5% since 2003, and European production reached 5.7 MT.
In Europe, exterior (cladding, roofing) and interior construction account for more than 70% of pre-coated steel production and remain its preferred market. Nearly 9% of production goes through service centers for finishing operations (slitting, blanking). However, consumption of high-gloss pre-painted steel sheet for household appliance cladding has been stagnant since 2004 and now accounts for only 6% of production.
To meet the various needs expressed by these markets, a highly diversified range of products has been developed to respond to different demands: appearance, aesthetics, shape, corrosion resistance, light resistance (UV resistance), mechanical strength, scratch resistance, ease of application, recycling, maintenance, and renovation.
