3. Mechanisms of Water-Induced Deterioration of Glass

Depending on the weathering conditions, some of the mechanisms listed above (interdiffusion, hydrolysis, condensation, precipitation of secondary phases) may be favored over others.

Figure 1 illustrates the processes that govern the kinetics of glass weathering; these occur in series or in parallel and are closely coupled. The blue blocks represent the processes governing the selective release and transport of ions toward the glass surface or into the solution, while the yellow blocks represent the mechanisms of weathering of the glass matrix
