5. Conclusion

As a plant bioresource with a diverse biochemical composition, microalgae are attracting growing industrial interest. Their advantages can be summarized as follows:

  • a great diversity of biomolecules, opening up a very wide range of applications, from nutrition to biofuels and various active ingredients for human health;

  • their use in the context of the transition from an economy based on fossil resources to a circular bioeconomy, which responds to a growing demand from civil society and to the challenges of industry's environmental transition;

  • microalgae, whose productivity per unit area is higher than that of higher plants, allowing for more efficient land use;

  • production facilities can be set up on non-agricultural soils, in basins or brackish...
