2.1 Carbon contribution
During combustion, coke releases carbon which reacts with oxygen in the air.
SCROLL TO TOPThe thermal energy released at the cupola by carbon combustion is necessarily incomplete, due to the simultaneous presence of carbon, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Indeed, the exothermic oxidation of carbon to CO2 is followed by a partial reduction of CO2 to CO by the carbon present. The extent of this reduction depends on the temperature level. The reactions are as follows:
