Cast steel production

In foundries, final deoxidation or calming is a very important operation, the aim of which is to prevent the release of gases during solidification and cooling of the cast part. As these gas releases are likely to create volume defects (pitting, blowholes) or harmful metal compounds, the aim is to control the oxygen content, followed by nitrogen and hydrogen. Controlling oxygen content also helps to improve the micrographic cleanliness of steel (figure 15 ).
