6. Examples of mineral processing

6.1 Aluminum

The Bayer process is universally used for bauxite ore. It takes advantage of the amphoteric properties of alumina. After the ore is crushed, concentrated caustic soda dissolves the alumina according to the following reaction:

{Al}_{2} O_{3}, n H_{2} O + 2 NaOH \to {Al}_{2} O_{3} {,Na}_{2} O + n H_{2} O
