Extractive metallurgy and recycling of titanium and its alloys

In 2014, ore consumption was mainly accounted for by pigments and fillers (90-95% of ore mined), which are used in the paint, plastics, paper and ceramics industries (figure 22 ); 5-10% of ore is used in metallurgy, in the form of ferrotitanium for steel additions, or to produce titanium alloys. Briefly, these alloys have high mechanical properties (mechanical strength-ductility compromise of between 400 MPa-50% for unalloyed titanium alloys and 1,500 to 2,000 MPa-5 to 15% for the formulations with the highest additive content) and low density (4.54 g/cm ³ ).
