5. Properties
Silver has very specific properties, linked to its high conductivity of electricity and heat, its reflectivity and the low or zero solubility of its salts.
Silver crystallizes in the cubic system. Its unit cell is the face-centered cube, whose crystal parameter is 0.407 nm.
The density is 10.5 × 103 kg · m–3 at room temperature. Melting and vaporization temperatures are 961.9 and 2,212°C respectively.
Of all the elements, silver is the best conductor of heat, with a thermal conductivity of 420 W · m–1· K–1. It is also the best conductor of electricity; its resistivity is 1.59 µΩ · cm.
Polished silver is highly reflective in the infrared. This property is put to good use in the manufacture of telescope...
