2. Theoretical basis
The main operation in stainless steel refining is decarburization. This involves reducing the carbon content from around 1.5% to a final value of around 0.03%, or even 0.01%. Decarburization is carried out by oxygen blowing, but for chromium-rich charges, it is absolutely necessary to reduce the partial pressure of carbon monoxide if massive chromium oxidation is to be avoided.
