Nitrogen transfer in ternary iron-chromium-nitrogen systems involves diffusion-precipitation mechanisms. To illustrate the interaction between chromium and nitrogen, we take the case of nitriding iron-chromium alloys with chromium mass fractions of 1%, 3% and 5%, nitrided at 520°C for 48 h (KN = 1).
