3. Comparison of different techniques

When comparing the various mechanical surface treatment techniques used in industry or under development, the following information can be gleaned.

Shot peening, roller burnishing, hammering, laser shock treatment, and ultrasonic shot peening are the five most widely used and most effective surface treatments for improving material performance. Residual compressive stresses are essential for compensating for mechanical stresses induced by the operation of mechanical systems.
