2. Principle of mechanical surface treatments

2.1 Shot peening

Shot peening involves blasting small steel, cast iron, glass, or ceramic balls (shot) at high speed (10 to 100 m/s) onto the part to be treated.

Shot blasting is carried out under perfectly controlled conditions that are completely different from the many uses of shot blasting for cleaning or descaling parts. The size of these beads can vary from 0.1 to 3 mm depending on the machine configurations used. All shot used must comply with a particle size distribution set by the following standards [17] .
