The use of polymers and organic matrix composites to manufacture mechanical parts is now widespread. The diversity of their products and processing techniques has enabled them to penetrate mechanical engineering markets traditionally reserved for metallic materials.
Despite our efforts to produce quality parts, premature failures can occur due to defects introduced at the time of processing, factors not or inadequately considered at the design stage, or misuse of parts.
This situation is not confined to polymer-based materials, but also applies to metallic materials.
Failure is, in fact, an integral part of the life of parts. A good understanding of the process that led to the accidental damage provides the basis for feedback to the design and manufacturing phases, and can serve as technical support for the product or process FMEA tools. This helps to improve product quality and reduce costs.
