3. Solubility of metals and metalloids in aluminum
For two metals to be alloyed, the added metal must be soluble in the base metal, in both liquid and solid states, in the form of a "solid solution".

In conventional metallurgy (as opposed to powder metallurgy (PM), where alloys are made from powder mixtures, then sintered), alloy production begins in the foundry, where other metals are added to the molten base metal to make up the alloy.
