2. Rigidity
Flexural rigidity is the main reason for using sandwich structures. However, pure bending stiffness is often not enough to quantify a panel's performance, since this load never occurs alone. In-plane tensile, out-of-plane compression and transverse shear behavior must not be overlooked.
In this section, we seek to express the characteristic stiffness properties of the sandwich panel as a function of the material properties of the facings and core. Two categories of properties are used depending on the context: equivalent material properties and macroscopic plate properties.
