As mentioned in the introduction, the calculation of characteristics other than those measured in tension poses a number of problems, either due to a lack of sufficiently general data, or because the significance of property measurements is less absolute. This is the case, for example, for toughness, often assessed by Charpy V curves, which are only one type of test among others. In fact, we know how to switch from one type of brittle fracture test to another, including K _{IC type measurements} using transition temperature relationships.
