It is therefore possible to predict toughness distribution from impact strength using non-empirical approaches. It requires numerical modeling of the tests and, in particular, of the Charpy test, which presents a number of difficulties.

To model the Charpy test in the ductile-fragile transition, at least the following conditions must be met:

  • an elasto-viscoplastic calculation (without taking inertia effects into account);

  • contact modeling ;

  • ductile tearing prior to cleavage;

  • a three-dimensional calculation.
