Slag is made up of oxides from the ore gangue, additions and mineral matter (ash) from coke and coal. Reactions in the crucible between cast iron and liquid slag lead to a division of elements between cast iron and slag; the latter therefore plays a role in purifying the cast iron, particularly as regards sulfur.
Slag consists of four main oxides, CaO, SiO
