The casting of stainless steels is not fundamentally different from that of ordinary steels, as described at

.
In general, ferritic stainless steels are not used in castings because their toughness in the as-cast condition is too low. Among martensitic stainless steels, it is primarily those with low carbon content (up to 0.4%) that are used to produce castings, as those with high carbon content are too brittle (due to the "tapure" phenomenon).
The type of mold must be selected to prevent surface recarburization of the stainless steel.
