In practice, aluminum offers excellent corrosion resistance, since it can often be used without coating. Suitably chosen, – or – unprotected aluminum alloys are particularly resistant to weathering, fresh water, sea water and many food and chemical products. .

However, as with most common metals, corrosion damage can occur in various forms, depending on the nature of the aluminum alloy selected, its metallurgical state, exposure conditions, assembly and stressing conditions.

The following section describes the main types of corrosion that can occur on aluminum alloys, and the precautions to be taken to avoid them.
