2. Modification and synthesis of materials by ionic mixing

One of the phenomena resulting from implantation/irradiation is the ballistic mixing of target atoms. This mixing is linked to the displacement of the recoil atoms projected by the incident ion (recoil mixing), to which is added, when the energy transferred is high, the displacement of secondary ions within the cascades (cascade mixing).

  • When the matrix is chemically homogeneous, irradiation defects can be punctual or extensive (dislocation loops, stacking defects, amorphous zones, grain boundary modifications, etc.). This is the case of irradiation or self-implantation described in the article
