4. Digital cameras

Digital cameras on microscopes use two main types of sensor:

  • CCD sensors, the precursors ;

  • CMOS sensors, which are coming into widespread use.

4.1 CCD (Charge-Coupled Device)

The CCD "charge-coupled device" is the sensor that has enabled the widespread use of digital cameras for technical and scientific applications. Invented by George E. Smith and Willard Boyle at Bell Laboratories in 1969, its discoverers were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009
