3. Extruder operation
The extruder is a machine that conveys and processes solid or liquid products by means of one or more screws rotating in a barrel, and forces them continuously into an extrusion head.
The materials mixed and plasticized as they are transferred into the sheath can be heated, cooled (sometimes) and degassed; they can pass through a filter before being extruded using a die or a die and punch.
The characteristics of extruders (figure 3) vary according to the nature and flow rates of the material to be processed.
Examplecharacteristics of a machine used to process plastics and elastomers.
Screw diameter: 120 mm.
Screw length: 24 times diameter.
Screw rotation speed: 1 to 80 rpm.
120 kW DC drive motor.
